Balloon Sustainability: Environmental Facts & Responsible Practices

The Truth About Balloons and Our Environment

At ATX Bubbles, we believe in creating magical event experiences while also being responsible stewards of our environment. We understand that many of our clients care deeply about sustainability, which is why we're committed to providing accurate information about the environmental impact of balloons and our industry practices.

Myth vs. Reality: Balloon Materials

Latex Balloons Are Not Plastic: Many people mistakenly believe that latex balloons are made from plastic and will remain in landfills for centuries. This is not accurate. Latex balloons are made from a biodegradable, naturally occurring material derived from rubber trees.

While manufacturers do add chemicals to the process (dyes, silicone, preservatives), a typical latex balloon will break down within a decade in a landfill. Compared to plastic bottles, bags, and straws that can last for centuries, the environmental footprint of latex balloons is significantly smaller.

Sustainability of the Balloon Industry: A Renewable Resource

The balloon industry is surprisingly sustainable. Raw latex comes from rubber tree sap harvested in various jungles around the world. Unlike the lumber industry which cuts down trees, latex is collected by making small, controlled slices in the bark of the trees—similar to how maple syrup is harvested.

This sustainable collection method means that trees are not harmed in the production of balloons. In fact, the balloon industry has a vested interest in protecting the world's jungles and rubber tree populations, making it an environmentally-conscious industry overall.

Our Environmental Responsibility

Against Balloon Releases: While properly handled balloons can be an uplifting addition to celebrations, ATX Bubbles firmly stands against balloon releases. When released into the air, balloons eventually return to earth as litter. Wildlife may mistake colorful balloon fragments for food, potentially causing harm.

Foil/mylar balloons pose additional problems as they conduct electricity and can cause power outages if caught in power lines. Since 2018, the balloon industry has collectively opposed releasing balloons into the air for any reason.

Best Practices for Eco-Friendly Balloon Use

At ATX Bubbles, we implement several best practices to minimize environmental impact:

Proper Disposal: We ensure all balloons are properly disposed of after events.

Reusable Elements: We incorporate reusable components in our installations whenever possible.

Biodegradable Options: We prioritize biodegradable latex balloons over foil alternatives when appropriate.
